Beliefs and myths about Banana


1. In India, it is believed that carrying banana while traveling to any place is unlucky.


2. Fishermen in Bangladesh never carry banana while boarding on a fishing boat, as they believe banana on fishing boat is unlucky.


3. In some places in Bangladesh, fisher men apply Banana oil onto their hands before spooking the fish.


4. In India, there are many villages where people are against planting banana tree in the house premises. They plant the banana tree in any empty plot adjacent to their home.


5. In many parts of rural India, only eldest member (else elderly) of the family can plant banana tree. It is believed that the person dies soon after plating, hence younger members of the family is not allowed to plant the banana tree. Another belief behind that lies, banana plant is most useful plant, as elderly person would have done many good work for the progress of the family, he (yes, the male member) deserves to plant it. So planting banana tree by them is the symbol of showing respect to the elderly member of the family,


6. In many villages in India, used kitchen dishes are washed under the banana plant.


7. In all Hindu festivals banana is one of the most essential things to be used.


8. In Hindu marriages in India, banana trees are tied at the entrance of the house to bless the newly-weds.

In Indian marriage ceremony, if the girl is “Manglik” or has “Chewai Dosham” according to astrological calculation she gets married to a banana plat before marrying the groom.


9 In Asian countries, especially in India, Thailand and Malaysia, it is believed that female ghost haunts in banana trees during the night.


10. There is an old belief in Thailand that patient of chicken pox used to sleep on banana leaf.


11. In Thailand, Spain and Arab, banana is used in the marriage ceremony which indicates the plenty of money, rice, children and nice place.

12. In Burma, bunch of green bananas along with one pieces of green coconuts keeping in a tray is offered to the Lord Buddha.

1. We, Indians eat more bananas than apples and oranges combined.

2. In fact, the average Indian eats 27 pounds of bananas every year.

3. This fruit evolved from a plant of genus Musa in Indo-Malaysian region.

4. But today it is mostly grown in the tropical region – South and Central America.

5. Banana grows on plant, not tree.

6. The root of banana plant can be more than 100 years old.

7. Banana plant can grow up to 25 feet.

8. Banana leaf can extend 9-10 feet in the air.

9. The Cavendish Banana is most common banana sold in the world.

10. There are two types of banana in the world – Plantain and Banana. Banana and plantains can be differentiated based on their intended use as food. Plantain is known as cooking banana while the rest is dessert banana.

11. A fully grown banana can help you consume 15% of our daily required Vitamin C.

12. Banana has no fat, no sodium, so cholesterol, so it can be considered as the good diet food for the dieters.

13. Banana has potassium, fibre, Vitamin C and B6 which are good for the health pregnant women.

14. As the Vitamin B6 regulates blood glucose level, Banana provides you positive effect on your mood.
